At first glance, one might understandably think that the main impetus for making “The Home Road” – the brand-new film by Portland-based filmmaker Tonya Shevenell screening at Lincoln Theater on Saturday, Sept. 23 – was to create a historical documentary about the life of Shevenell’s great-great-great-grandfather Israel Shevenell. Israel Shevenell was the first permanent French-Canadian settler in Biddeford and the town’s first French voter. He arrived in Biddeford after walking there from Quebec, Canada to find work in the spring of 1845.

Wilde and scenic: There are two things that I find crucial to a good art-viewing experience (in addition to, of course, the presence of good art): adequate lighting and a quiet room. The current exhibit of paintings by Walpole artist Sarah Wilde in the West Gallery of River Arts in Damariscotta, “On the Wilde Side,” hits it on both counts – well, all three, if one counts the fact that Wilde’s art is very good.

Mixing work and pleasure: On the morning of Thursday, Aug. 31, one of my colleagues here at The Lincoln County News, reporter Maia Zewert, and I took a 50-minute Hardy Boat trip from New Harbor to spend the day on Monhegan Island, which is part of Lincoln County and, therefore, part of the paper’s coverage area.
Review: Seeking Out Monhegan Artist Alice Boynton
The art studio and gallery of painter Alice Boynton is tucked away at the end of a wooded trail near the north end of Monhegan Island, 10 miles off the coast of Maine, but still part of Lincoln County. Like everything else on the picturesque island, the journey to the destination and the destination itself are equally charming.

Lincoln Theater in the limelight: As readers have no doubt noticed, Lincoln Theater in downtown Damariscotta has been closed for a number of days while the theater’s wood floor is sanded and revarnished. It will reopen in all its new glory on Friday, Sept. 8 with the screening of the 2017 film “The Big Sick.” Based on a true story, the film, which stars Kumail Nanjiani and Zoe Kazan, is about a Pakistan-born comedian who falls in love with an American grad student. Movie-rating website rottentomatoes.com gives it a whopping 98 percent approval rating on its Tomatometer.
Review: Denise Rankin Paintings, Basketwork a Delight for the Senses
Damariscotta artist Denise Rankin’s work is nothing if not fine. The painter and Shaker basket maker excels in both of her chosen mediums. Luckily for art lovers, Rankin’s whimsical, carefully crafted paintings and equally painstakingly crafted Shaker boxes and trays are on exhibit at The Stable Gallery in Damariscotta through mid-September.
Review: Work of Pastel Master Kathleen Galligan Tells ‘Quiet Tale’
The work of Bristol pastel artist and oil painter Kathleen Galligan has been gracing the walls of both floors of Legacy Properties Sotheby’s International Realty in Damariscotta for well over a month. Her “Intersections II” exhibit will run through the end of August. Those who have not had the opportunity to see this collection of Galligan’s masterful work really ought to view it before it is taken down.

Making pottery in the neighborhood: An exciting thing is happening in the Lincoln County world of pottery-making. Well-known local potter and ceramics teacher Liz Proffetty is on the verge of opening Neighborhood Clay in Damariscotta, a pottery studio that will offer lessons and open studio time as well as a retail space for the sale of artists’ work. Neighborhood Clay will open its doors on Friday, Sept. 1. One can already sign up for classes online.

Jean Kigel weekend show: On Friday, Aug. 4, I got to have a sneak preview of Waldoboro artist Jean Kigel’s upcoming “Eastern Views” art show, which will run from Aug. 11-13, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Kigel invited me to tour the show, which occupies most of the rooms on two floors of her Waldoboro home at 176 Winslows Mills Road, aka the Brick House Gallery. The opening reception for her 19th annual “Eastern Views” show will take place from 5-7 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 11, featuring drinks and snacks (and Kigel!) in Kigel’s lovely, expansive, art-filled house.
Review: River Company Production Captures Spirit of Community Theater
The cozy Porter Meeting Hall at Skidompha Library in Damariscotta was the setting for River Company’s afternoon presentation on Sunday, Aug. 6 of the comedic Christopher Durang play “Vanya and Sonia and Masha and Spike,” the third in a series of six performances. The play is directed by Allison Eddyblouin and dedicated in the program “to the memory of Charlie Waterman,” the co-founder of River Company who passed away July 30.
World-Famous Opera Singer Kate Aldrich to Perform on Home Turf
World-renowned mezzo-soprano and Damariscotta native Kate Aldrich insists she does not get mobbed at, say, Renys or Metcalf’s by Lincoln County residents wanting her to sign autographs. But in bigger cities around the world, Aldrich has been pursued after performances by “fangirls – a very colorful type of person, to put it kindly and mildly,” she said in a recent phone interview from the Alna home she shares with her husband and 6-year-old daughter. “In Asia, it’s crazy.”

Loughridge out and about: I received a press release recently announcing that on Friday, Aug. 11, from 4-7 p.m., The Brunswick Inn, at 165 Park Row in Brunswick, will host a reception for South Bristol artist Sally Loughridge, “whose original paintings have graced the inn’s Carriage House for the last few years.”

Dahmen gets well-deserved props: I had the pleasure of spending time recently with Newcastle artist Jane Dahmen at the cafe at Sherman’s Maine Coast Book Shop in Damariscotta (a pleasure on two counts). Dahmen, as some people know, was recently named in Maine Magazine’s fifth annual 50 Mainers issue as one of 50 residents of the Pine Tree State that are “leading by example.”

Good to have friends: Fans of The Harbor Theatre, the cool little one-screen movie theater in Boothbay Harbor, will doubtless be pleased to know that, contrary to what had previously been announced, the theater will not be closing down later this year. As the theater’s website notes, the Friends of The Harbor Theatre, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, will be stepping in to purchase and operate the theater effective Oct. 1, after the current lease runs out.
