Carol Wise stepped down from her role as the Damariscotta Region Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk committee chairwoman Tuesday after 12 years at the post. Under her tenure Strides raised over $1,000,000 toward the fight against breast cancer.
“It wasn’t an easy decision, but I decided it was time after 12 years,” said Wise.
Wise had initially considered stepping down two years ago, but then thought of new ideas to improve the walk.
“I don’t feel like an idea’s over until I put it to bed,” she said.
A breast cancer survivor herself, Wise has dedicated her life to fighting the disease. Wise has volunteered for the several cancer awareness and support groups throughout the Midcoast Region, including Strides Against Breast Cancer, Relay for Life, and Reach to Recovery.
Wise’s own battle with cancer led her to work twice as hard for the local community.
“I’m very lucky to be alive. This is my payback, “said Wise.
Though she is stepping down as the Strides chairwoman, Wise will continue serve in an advisory capacity. She will also continue her work at Reach to Recovery, an organization dedicated to helping recently diagnosed breast cancer patients by pairing them with breast cancer survivors for mentorship and help.
“I have always felt this is a vital issue for the Lincoln County community,” said Wise.
Under her leadership, the Damariscotta event received several awards from the American Cancer Society. Despite the poor economy, the Strides Walk has continually raised sizeable donations for cancer research. Last year, during the worst of the recession, over $120,000 was raised.
“The reason the Strides Walk has been so successful is because of the wonderful committee of both men and women that has helped put it together year after year,” said Wise
Wise’s committee received the Sandra C. Labaree Judge’s Award for their work, given to volunteers who do exceptional work on behalf of the American Cancer Society. The award is named after the late Wiscasset resident who worked tirelessly in the fight against cancer, but ultimately lost her life to the disease.
Wise also lauded Lincoln County residents for their undying support of the American Cancer Society.
“This part of Midcoast Maine has been very supportive. It has been a success but I never knew it would be such a great success.”
When asked what advice she would give to her successor, Wise said simply:
“I have no advice. It’ll come from the heart.”
