A Damariscotta mother was indicted last week after allegedly assaulting her 11-month-old daughter in November.
Rebecca E. DeBella, 25, faces a felony charge of assault and a misdemeanor charge of endangering the welfare of a child.
Damariscotta Police Officer Aaron Beck went to the apartment late Nov. 2 after receiving a report from DeBella’s ex-boyfriend that she “threw” the girl onto a couch and “kicked her in the face,” according to court documents.
DeBella told Beck “she did not throw the child but ‘tossed’ her onto the couch,” Beck wrote in his affidavit. “She said that she only pushed the child [with] her foot and it knocked [her] over.”
The 11-month-old was transported by ambulance to the hospital. “I did observe a small bruise on the child’s face,” Beck wrote.
DeBella is free on $1000 cash bail and now lives in Warren. Her bail conditions bar contact with the victim and certain family members, forbid her to possess dangerous weapons or use alcohol, and require her to submit to random searches.
She must also abide by the terms of a pretrial contract, which include a curfew, mandatory substance abuse counseling and weekly check-ins.
She has filed a motion to amend bail that would allow her to have contact with her daughter.
DeBella is scheduled to appear in Lincoln County Superior Court for arraignment Jan. 31 at 8:30 a.m.
Waldoboro attorney Philip Cohen is representing DeBella.
DeBella will plead not guilty at the arraignment, Cohen said.
