After a brief physical confrontation, Damariscotta police officers arrested a Damariscotta man caught burglarizing a Pleasant Street home April 4.
Nathan Herald, 22, faces charges of burglary, burglary of motor vehicle and refusing to submit to arrest or detention.
A resident of the Pleasant Street home reported that Herald “was going through their vehicles,” according to a Damariscotta Police Dept. press release.
Sgt. Chad Andrews and Officer Aaron Beck, responding to the call at 1:30 a.m., found Herald hiding in the caller’s garage. After a “scuffle” with Andrews, the officers completed the arrest, Damariscotta Police Chief Steve Drake said.
Herald is one of two suspects in a January theft at the Maine Coast Book Shop and Café, Drake said. He is also a suspect in two motor vehicle burglaries on the Biscay Road in Damariscotta, where he lives.
Andrews and Beck recovered a bag containing “materials that appear to have been stolen out of vehicles” at the scene April 4. The items include sunglasses and loose change, Drake said.
Herald was “taking what he could find,” Drake said, and did not steal in-dash stereo equipment.
Herald left Two Bridges Regional Jail after posting $500 cash bail at 10:20 a.m. April 4. He is scheduled to appear in court in Wiscasset on May 26 at 8:30 a.m.
Herald could not be reached for comment.
Anyone discovering “missing items” from their vehicles can contact the Damariscotta Police Dept. at 563-1909. Andrews is the investigating officer.
