The Damariscotta Police Department is warning citizens of a text message scam targeting area cell phones. The scam warns the recipients that their credit card has been terminated and they should call 207-502-1145.
This is really an attempt to steal personal financial information, police say. A call to this number reaches an automated number system that asks for the potential victim’s 16-digit credit card number.
People should never assume that a text, voice or e-mail message warning of a problem with their bank account or credit card is real.
Anyone who does receive such a notice is advised to contact their financial institution directly with phone numbers listed on the card or bank statement.
