Fire consumed a chicken coop in Whitefield in the afternoon on March 27.
Although no one was injured and the fire did not damage any other structures, firefighters were unable to save 100 chicks that were in the coop when the fire started.
Mike Johnson owns the home at 67 Hunts Meadow Rd. He said at the scene the source of fire must have been electrical and related to the lamps used to incubate the chicks.
The fire started around 1:45 p.m. and within minutes firefighters from Whitefield, Jefferson, Alna, Pittston and Somerville were on the scene. Despite heavy winds and dry conditions they prevented the fire from spreading to any of the nearby structures, or across the fields on the property.
Johnson, who moved to the home from Dresden about a month ago with his wife, thanked all the rescue crews who responded. “I’m just very glad to have them all here so quickly,” Johnson said. “From the time that I was worried about the fire moving toward my house to the time that I wasn’t, was only a few minutes.”
