The Damariscotta Mills fish ladder is ready for the spring smelt run.
Stan Waltz and Deb Wilson, two members of the Fish Committee of Nobleboro and Newcastle, met with the contractor at the fish ladder March 25, turning on the flow of water from Damariscotta Lake for the first time since construction began in fall 2010.
Everything works, Waltz said, although minor adjustments to each weir (the narrow passage between each pool) remain.
“They’re in the final tweaking stages at this point,” Waltz said.
Waltz expected the contractor to finish work as soon as March 28.
“This looks great,” Waltz said, admiring the ladder’s 22 new pools.
