Lincoln County Recycling will begin implementing a battery recycling program to encourage county residents to properly dispose of their rechargeable batteries and cell phones.
Updating the Lincoln County Commissioners Jan. 17, Recycling Plant Manager Michael Thompson said Lincoln County Recycling will be taking part in the “Call2Recycle” program, an initiative of the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation aimed at promoting environmental sustainability. The RNRC is a non-profit organization based out of Toronto.
Once the program is implemented, boxes at local transfer stations will be able to collect all types of cell phones and rechargeable batteries less than 11 pounds. Each battery must be placed in an individual plastic bag provided by the transfer station.
Alkaline, lithium, wet cell nickel-cadmium, and other non-rechargeable batteries will not be accepted, Thompson said. Wet cell lead acid vehicle batteries are also prohibited.
The program may expand in 2013 to cover these types of batteries, Thompson said.
“Call2Recyle” comes at no cost to the County taxpayer.
