Bristol author and historian Peter Hope presented a plaque commemorating the history of the Bristol town house to the Bristol Board of Selectmen Jan. 2.
According to the plaque, the original town house was built in 1799 on the Bristol Mills property where the present-day building stands. A new town house followed in 1840 and was “enlarged and fundamentally changed” in 1912. A “major interior renovation” took place in 2010.
Hope presented the plaque on behalf of the Old Bristol Historical Society. The plaque features an 1866 photograph of Bristol’s “Main Street,” including the 1840 town house, above the building timeline.
The selectmen thanked Hope and said they would hang the plaque in the town office.
