A three-car collision a little after 1 p.m. on Nov. 14 on Rt. 220 at the intersection with Old Augusta Road in Waldoboro sent several people to the hospital, police said.
Little is known about the accident at this time, said Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde. The accident report won’t be available until at least Nov. 19, he said.
“Almost everybody involved was brought to the hospital,” Labombarde said. It is unclear how serious their injuries were.
Deputy Waldoboro Fire Chief Dale Smith was at the scene and said that it was difficult to tell what happened. “Even we sat down and tried to figure it out, we couldn’t piece it together,” Smith said.
Smith emphasized that the Fire Department did not interview anyone involved and does not produce official accident reconstructions. “It was just conversation at the scene,” he said.
Smith was able to report that five people were injured in the crash and four were transported to the hospital. The fifth refused treatment.
None of the injuries appeared to be life threatening, Smith said.
Waldoboro resident Bill Brock, 82, has lived near the intersection for 30 years and said this is just one of many accidents he’s seen at the intersection over the years.
“I tried to get the town to do something about it, but nothing ever happened,” Brock said. “Seems to me that making it a four-way stop instead of a two-way stop might help.”
Labombarde said that in the three years he’s been chief, there have not been enough accidents at that intersection to raise concerns.
“If you’re going the speed limit, you’re going to see those stop signs [on Old Augusta Road] in either direction before you get to them,” Labombarde said. He questioned whether adding stop signs on Rt. 220, which has a 50 mph speed limit, might cause more problems.
Labombarde also pointed out that the speed limits and decisions about stop signs on Rt. 220, which is a state road, are made by the state, not the town.
