Somerville selectmen, the Ladies Auxiliary of the Somerville Fire Dept. and a number of town residents were on hand, Oct 6, at the dedication of the new Somerville Town Office at 72 Sand Hill Rd.
The town office had been housed at the former Somerville School, which is now home to (RSU 12) administrative offices.
“A year and a half ago, the project started to build a standalone town office,” Selectman Susan Greer told those assembled. “Through the many efforts and creativity of quite a lot of people, here we are.”
Sen. Chris Johnson (D-Somerville) presented the town with U.S. and Maine flags that had flown atop the Maine State House. The flags were raised on a new pole in front of the new office.
A new sign, under construction by Elaine Porter and Earl Landry was sponsored by the Whitefield Lions Club and Somerville Days Committee. At the dedication, local artist Claudia Fujinaga unveiled her design for the town seal that will be carved into the new sign.
Inside the building that, according to Johnson, was made from portable classrooms that served as the music classrooms at the former Jefferson School, Town Clerk Ernestine Peaslee was settling onto her new work space.
“This will be lovely,” she said.
The Somerville Town Office is open Monday and Friday from 3-7 p.m. and Wednesday from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. For more information, call 549-3828.
