Custom Cordage, located in Waldoboro’s Industrial Park, has created a unique method to retain workers during slower times, while helping reduce environmental waste.
Doormats from ‘the briny deep’ were developed by owner David Bird, owner.
These mats are created from the otherwise discarded floating rope that lobsterman exchange for sinking rope. This program was created to reduce line entanglement with Right Whales.
In his words, Bird “wanted to create something cool and interesting” to keep workers employed during the slower months of his business. It has done just that.
Two workers who would have been laid off, now continue to have work this winter because of Bird’s ingenuity.
Aimee Pearson of the Sunshine Market on Main Street in Waldoboro thinks it’s a grand idea. “I love the vibrant colors and the purpose for which they were created. It’s about people helping people and our environment – that’s my business philosophy as well.”
Mats measure approximately 17 by 31-inches and like fishing rope, come in a mixture of colors. No two are alike. They can be purchased at the Sunshine Market in Waldoboro for $19.95.
