Waldoboro Police arrested Charles Scavetta, 22, of Newcastle, on the morning of July 20. Scavetta was charged with gross sexual assault and assault and released on $2000 unsecured bail later the same morning.
According to Thomaston Police Chief Kevin Haj, Officer Tim Hoppe received a report of an assault at 6:43 a.m. Upon arrival at the scene on Pine Street in Thomaston, Hoppe “determined it to be sexual assault,” Haj said.
Hoppe “put word out to have Waldoboro on the lookout” for Scavetta’s black Dodge truck, Haj said.
According to Waldoboro Police Chief Bill Labombarde, Officer Thomas Hoepner stopped Scavetta’s black Dodge pickup at 6:55 a.m., arrested him and held him for questioning.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office transported Scavetta to the Knox County Jail. His truck, meanwhile, was towed to Thomaston. “Later in the afternoon we searched the vehicle,” Haj said. “He had pocketknives all through the vehicle.”
Police found about 30 knives. Haj called the presence of the knives “strange,” but said all but one of the knives are legal. Police summonsed Scavetta for possession of a butterfly knife. The knives are illegal in Maine “by nature of their construction,” Haj explained.
About 29 grams of marijuana in “several small bags” were also found in the vehicle. According to Haj, “there was a scale and more baggies for repackaging.” A trafficking summons is forthcoming, Haj said.
The victim of the alleged assault went to the hospital for a rape kit, but did not sustain physical injuries, Haj said.
Scavetta is scheduled to appear in Knox County Superior Court on Sept. 29 at 8:30 a.m.
