Firefighters snuffed out the inferno early this morning at a Westport Island summer home that had been under construction. The fire followed an explosion that was heard by people living in Sagadahoc County.
Firefighters from Wiscasset, Edgecomb, Alna and Woolwich joined the Westport Island Fire Dept. responding to the fire at 91 Bay Shore Rd. around 4:41 a.m., according to Westport Island Fire Chief Bob Mooney.
“The whole structure was gone,” Mooney said, adding that on arrival he saw a lot of flames and the building had collapsed into the basement area of the home.
Mooney said there were no injuries. Mooney said he believes the owners have been living out of state. He said the explosion nearby residents reported hearing likely came from a propane tank exploding. Firefighters kept the fire from spreading and cleared the scene around 7:30 this morning.
