Whitefield selectmen learned this week that Lincoln County Commissioners upheld the board’s position concerning a property assessment complaint.
Last August, Heather Ryan complained a lot she owned on a discontinued road was difficult to access yet had been appraised as a house lot. Under the new assessment, its value had increased from $12,500 to $18,500.
Commissioners heard Ryan’s petition on Dec. 21 and issued a finding on Jan. 3 that the town’s “assessing method is consistent with other Whitefield assessments in the town at this time.”
Monday evening, Whitefield board member Sue McKeen commented, “The assessment advisory committee is looking at categories of property and they’ll be advising us.”
The committee was formed in response to the board’s recognition that much work is needed to iron out the town’s approach to defining land categories and assigning values. A report is expected next month.
