Alice L. (Benner) Barstow, 86, of Bristol, passed away unexpectedly as the result of an automobile accident May 13 in Wiscasset. Born in Jonesboro on Oct. 24, 1929, she was the daughter of Noyes and Nancy (Norton) O’Brien.
Alice grew up in Down East Maine and attended local schools, graduating from Washington County Normal School with her teaching degree. In 1949, she married Mathias Benner, whom she met while working at a local bakery. Together they raised their seven children until his passing in 1988.
In 1996, she married Henry Barstow, and they had many great times together both in Maine and in Florida during the winter months. She enjoyed dancing, cooking and baking, and watching her grandchildren’s sporting events. She had a strong faith, and was a regular parishioner of area churches. More than anything, she had a tremendous love for her family and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her grandson, Christopher Benner; and stepchildren, Michael Barstow and Holly Barstow.
She is survived by her children, Sheila Greiff of Linden, N.J., Edward “Buzz” Benner and wife Terri of Pemaquid, Larry “Mike” Benner and wife Karen of Damariscotta, Dean Benner of Bristol, Valerie Clark of Wolfeboro, N.H., Victoria “Vicky” Williams and husband Brian of Damariscotta, and Alice Parlin of Nobleboro; grandchildren, Matthew Greiff, Nicole Greiff, Stephanie Vincentsen and husband Todd, Matt and wife Leigh Benner, Joseph Benner, Robert Benner, Thomas Benner, Ashlee Benner, Kyle Benner, Amy Smith, Erica Yantzer, Corey Clark, Kendra Clark, Sean Williams, Amanda Williams, Darren Williams, Allison Williams, Stephen Williams, Derrick Parlin and wife Vanessa, and James Parlin and wife Olivia; step-grandchildren, Chris Barstow, and Jamie Barstow; and many, many great-grandchildren.
A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m., Sun., May 22 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest in the Bristol Mills Cemetery immediately following the service.
