Alvah Sprague, 73, of Bristol, passed away at his home on the morning of April 30. Born in Damariscotta on July 28, 1943, he was the youngest child of Ralph and Thelma (Cornish) Sprague. Alvah grew up attending local schools, and graduated from Lincoln Academy.
Out of high school, he went to work for Colby & Gale before heading out on the ocean as a fisherman. He started his fishing career with Clelle Genthner aboard the Western Wave and later owned his own boats, first the Miss Fortune and later the Sara/Amy named after his two daughters. He also owned and operated Main Street Gulf in Damariscotta for several years.
When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed woodworking and building things with his hands, road trips to Florida, and he loved going out to eat. He was a long-time member of the Damariscotta-Newcastle Lions Club, was a member of the Damariscotta Fire Department, and enjoyed his yearly treks with friends to their hunting camp in Brownville. More than anything, he loved to socialize and make people laugh. He always had an infectious giggle, a sly smile, and twinkle in his eye.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by siblings, Ralph Jr., Fredrick, Beatrice, Aldana, Beverly, Bernice, and Neil; and long-time furry companion, Stoney.
He is survived by wife, Jodi Dearing; daughter, Sara Lynne Sprague Pinkham and husband Kris, and their children, Joshua Hopkins, Jesse Peters and Shane Pinkham; daughter, Amy Sprague Cornaire and her twin daughters, Naiya and Natalie; stepdaughter, Heather Dearing; siblings, Virginia Berry, Anthony Sprague, and Thelma House and husband Ronald; sisters-in-law, Dorothy Sprague and Janice Sprague; the mother of his children, Lynne Campbell; as well as many nieces and nephews.
A time to gather and celebrate the life of Alvah will be held from 1-3 p.m., Thurs., May 4 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. He will be laid to rest privately in the Sheepscot Cemetery.
