Anna Lillian Winchenbach, 89, of Damariscotta, passed away on Nov. 7 at Coves Edge Nursing Home.
She was born in Waldoboro on Oct. 5, 1918, the daughter of Evron Winchenbach Flanders and Sadie Abbie Richards Flanders. She graduated with the first class to graduate from Waldoboro High School, Class of 1936.
On Oct. 5, 1937, she married Carl Adolph Winchenbach. It was an extra special day because both she and Carl shared that day as their birthday. They later purchased the home where she was born and raised three daughters. They were married for 22 years.
Anna was always a busy lady, helping on their farm with the many chickens, cattle, dogs, gardening, canning, making jams and jellies, mincemeat, sewing, cooking and pickling.
She lived with her brother in Waldoboro for a short time and later went to Georgia to work at Wildwood Hospital, cooking and doing other jobs. She returned to Maine to live in Camden where her Seventh Day Adventist Church and many friends were located. She became superintendent of the Sabbath school and often sang for the congregation. Always the devoted Christian, she taught Bible School at the Maine State Prison in Thomaston and did numerous fund-raising activities for the church.
For 20 30 years, she resided and worked at many estates in Camden and Rockport, mainly the Donald Dodge estate. She was the kitchen co-coordinator, planning menus, dinner parties, cooking, flower arrangement and other things that needed her expertise. She loved the families, the beautiful flowers and spacious grounds by the ocean and meeting many celebrities. She enjoyed living in Camden and once was pictured in the local newspaper out walking in a big Nor easter.
In later years, she lived at Merry Gardens Independent Living in Camden for a year, Camden Health Care Center for three years and had a brief stay at the Knox Center for long term care in Rockland before her permanent move to Cove s Edge in Damariscotta where she had resided for the last five years.
She was predeceased by her daughter, Lorraine Fowler on July 16, 1981; grandson, Kenneth Fowler; brother, Vincent Flanders; and sister, Naomi F. Wallace.
Survivors include her daughters, Claire Clifford and husband Earle of Boothbay, and Donna Berkeley of Warren; son-in-law, Kenneth Fowler of Waldoboro; grandchildren, Jeffrey Clifford and Steven Clifford, both of Edgecomb, Gina Drummond and husband Brad of Boothbay, Scot Berkeley of Portland, Carla Eve Thompson of Warren, Debbie Fowler Robbins, Tammy Moody and Laurie Cailer, all of Waldoboro; 12 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Time of visitation 6-8 p.m., Mon., Nov. 12 at Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Celebration of her life 11 a.m., Tues., Nov. 13 at Hall Funeral Home with Pastor Enoch Brownell officiating. Burial will follow in Sweetland Cemetery, Waldoboro.
