Anthony Christian Massey, 27, of Peckville, Penn., was tragically killed in a motorcycle accident July 12. Anthony was born July 2, 1982 in Augusta, son of Bruce Massey and Jean Phelps. He grew up in Gardiner and graduated from Hall-Dale High in 2001. While at Hall-Dale he was an athlete who participated in baseball, basketball, and golf and was a member of two state championship golf teams. After high school he served in the Army and was honorably discharged as an E2 Private in 2004. He was employed by Tobyhanna Army Depot in Tobyhanna, Penn. as a government employee where he worked as an electronics mechanic. Through Tobyhanna he served three tours as a civilian contractor in Iraq, ending his final tour in May 2009. While in Iraq he implemented ‘Warlock’, a jamming system that helped protect soldiers from IED explosives.
He lived his 27 years to the fullest, dabbling in many hobbies including golfing, fishing, hunting, motorcycling, snowmobiling, four wheeling, online gaming with his brothers, Red Sox games, traveling and even owned a stock car at one time, although spending time and touching the lives of his friends and family were the most precious to him. Anth had the ability to bring a smile to anybody’s face and brighten everybody’s day.
He is survived by his parents Bruce and Ginny Massey of Farmingdale, and George and Jean Phelps of Gardiner; brothers, Joshua Massey and wife Sarah of Richmond, and William and Michael Phelps of Gardiner; sisters, Danica and Taylor Massey of Farmingdale; grandparents, Robert and Arolyn Antognoni of Jefferson, Winona Massey of Gardiner, Andrew and Sheila Murray of Pocasset, Mass., and Gloria Phelps of Thetford, Vt.; along with many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral services to celebrate his life 2 p.m., Sat., July 25 at First Baptist Church of Hallowell, 4 Franklin St., Hallowell. Friends and family may call from 4-7 p.m., Fri., July 24 at Staples Funeral Home, 53 Brunswick Ave., Gardiner.
In lieu of flowers the family is accepting donations that will be presented to a charity in memory of Anthony.
