Arthur Ludwig, 88, of Warren, died Sept. 8 at Fieldcrest Manor in Waldoboro, after a brief illness.
He was born March 4, 1918 in Milton, Mass., a son of Edward and Olive Snow Ludwig. He and his family moved to Hope when he was a young teen in the early 30’s. He attended local schools in Hope.
Arthur went to work as a young man during the depression, and as hard times fell on him, he often told of roasting horse chestnuts to eat and hunting deer and rabbits for food. He worked for a short time on a barge.
He married Edna Collamore in Lincolnville Beach in the early 40’s and they were together a short time when she died of diabetes. Arthur remarried in the early 50’s to Karin Ludwig and they lived in Camden where they had a chicken farm. They raised three foster children who were brothers, Mark, Kenny and Carl Leonard.
When Arthur retired, he and Karin moved to Warren where he had a blueberry farm and so enjoyed coon hunting. He had several coon dogs and a special one named “Trouble.” He also continued to hunt deer and rabbit.
Arthur’s wife, Karin, became sick in the late 70’s and he cared for her for over ten years. His father, Ed, moved in with him and he cared for him for several years until his death in 1981. He took care of them so they would not have to be put in nursing homes.
After his father and wife passed away, he moved in with his long time friend, Helen Nilson, whose husband, Evert, had passed away.
Helen and Arthur enjoyed going for rides in the country and sometimes stopped for lunch at Joy’s, in Washington. Arthur enjoyed spending time on his tractor cutting hay and plowing his garden. He liked going on his four-wheeler for rides on his property. He looked for grocery flyer sales on food and enjoyed grocery shopping.
Arthur was predeceased by his wives, Edna and Karin; a brother, Earl Ludwig; and a sister, Bernice Ludwig Scroton.
Arthur is survived by his longtime friend and companion, Helen Nilson of Warren; nieces and nephews, Alex, Keith, and Ed Ludwig, all of Hope, Marjorie Royer of Manchester, Conn., Linda Hillgrove of Rockland, Christine Stevens of Lincolnville, and Virginia Whitman of Lincolnville; sister-in-law, Barbara Ludwig of Hope; and several cousins in Massachusetts, including a special cousin Olive Drake and husband Harold of Canton, Mass.
Arthur will be sadly missed by his special friends, Frank and Lorna Mank of Warren; Ed and Laura Billings of Warren; Ronny and Alberta Dodge of Lincolnville; (Jim) Willis Boggs of Warren; and Gloria Simmons of Chelsea.
