Barbara Isabel Danforth Swett, 81, of Newcastle, departed for her heavenly home on Oct. 5 in Portland, following complications resulting from surgery.
Barbara, the youngest child of Frank and Margaret (Raynes) Danforth, was born in Bath on Feb. 27, 1928.
Barbara was a proud graduate of Morse High School. She attended Westbrook Junior College and graduated from Farmington State Teacher College in 1951.
She married Alton P. Swett on May 12, 1951 and devoted her life to him, her sons and their wives, her grandchildren, and her church and many volunteer activities. Barbara was known for her many contributions to various organizations that she was involved in: the Red Cross, the Corning Hospital Chapter, the Miles Memorial Hospital (where she has over 2300 hours registered) and the TOPS organization in both New York and Maine. Barbara especially enjoyed the many friends she made during the weekly work sessions of the Friday Guild of Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church. She also shared a passion with those who served in the Altar Guild as she took great pride in the work they performed.
She was extremely talented and took great pleasure in her handiwork; any project that she created was the essence of perfection. Barbara cherished all who came into her life and she enriched everyone’s life by her presence.
She was predeceased by her parents; sisters, Eleanor and Jean; and grandson, Allen Jacobi Swett.
Barbara is survived by her husband, Alton of Newcastle; sons, Allen and wife Janice of Corning, N.Y., and Mark and wife Pam of Sidney; granddaughters, Brooks Swett of Sebring, Fla., Melyssa and Allyson Swett of Painted Post, N.Y., and Michelle Carapella of Addison, N.Y.; grandson, Shawn Bard of Lebanon, N.H.; one little “sweet pea” great-grandson, Dante Blevins of Sebring, Fla.; brother and wife, Frank, Jr. and Catherine Danforth of Bath; two nephews and their wives and children, Danny Danforth of South Paris and Tommy Danforth of Rangley; and Abigail Swett, the German short hair pointer.
