Barbara L. Lorrain, 79, of Boothbay Harbor, passed away peacefully after a courageous battle with lung cancer on March 27 at St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor. She was born at home in Boothbay Harbor on April 6, 1931, the daughter of the late Alvin and Evelyn Sherman Lewis. She grew up in Boothbay Harbor and attended local schools and was a graduate of Boothbay Harbor High School.
After high school she worked at the Strand Theatre in Boothbay and began to start her family with her husband Raymond Lorrain. Along with her time at the Strand Theatre, she worked for Boothbay Harbor Communications as a dispatcher for the police, fire department, and EMS, a position she held for 31 years. She also served for two years as a selectwoman for Boothbay Harbor.
She loved animals and was always willing to lend whatever she could to help out at the animal shelter. She loved to knit and always had a bundle of mittens for KP Kids, Centah of Attention, or the day care program at the YMCA. She loved her community and was willing to do anything for the people in it. She was proud to say that she lived her whole life in Boothbay Harbor. She was a very caring person and she would do anything she could to help someone in need. She always had an open door for people who needed it and was always putting the needs of others before her own.
She was predeceased by her husband of 28 years, Raymond Lorrain; and brother, Harley Lewis.
Survivors include her daughter, Debbie Dieterle and husband Larry of Trevett; son, Paul Lorrain and wife Alice of Lyman; grandchildren, Devon Raye Dieterle and companion Gaspar Montalbano of Long Island, N.Y., Jason Lorrain of Boothbay, Abraham Lorrain of Boothbay and Murphy Lorrain of South Portland; great-granddaughter, Alyssa Raye of Long Island, N.Y.; brother, Paul Lorrain of Richmond; sister, Betty Penner of Ohio; special nephews, Steve Lorrain and wife Jennifer of Boothbay Harbor and Glen Burnham of Boothbay; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A private family service will be held at a later time.
