Carolyn Eva (Sherman) Carter, 88, of Portland, passed away June 27 at Sedgewood Commons. She was born in Newcastle on Dec. 9, 1922, the oldest daughter of the late Charles and Mary Sherman.
Carolyn graduated from Lincoln Academy in Damariscotta and married her late husband, William A. Carter. She lived most of her life in Portland where she worked for Fairchild Semiconductor for 20 years. Carolyn enjoyed going to church at Woodford Congregational Church where she was a past member of Fox Class. She was also a member of the Eastern Star. She loved nature, especially flowers, birds and enjoyed time at camp on Damariscotta Lake. Knitting, crocheting and sharing time with family were a special part of her life.
Carolyn was predeceased by her loving husband, William “Bill” Carter; and sister, Charlotte Gay.
She is survived by her daughters, Mary Warming and husband John of Hollis, Suzanne “Sue” Daniels and husband Richard of Hollis, Melanie Ouellette and husband Donald “Don” of Townsend, Mass. and Cynthia “Cindy” Laughlin and husband Walter of Gray; sons, Wayne Carter and wife Veronica “Roni” of South Portland and Mark Carter and wife Lori of South Portland; grandchildren, Christopher, Carrie, Virginia, Thomas, Melissa, Scott, Sarah, Nicholas, Benjamin, Kirsten and Stephanie; great-grandchildren, John Michael, Jacob, Alexis, Gage, and Lucas, with one more on the way.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association Maine Chapter, 383 US Router One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074 or Woodfords Congregational Church, 202 Woodford St., Portland, ME 04103.
Family will receive friends 1-2 p.m., Fri., July 1 followed by a memorial service at 2 p.m. at Woodfords Congregational Church, Meloon Chapel, 202 Woodford St., Portland. Interment will be private in Brooklawn Memorial Park.
