Cora Belle Lowery, 93, died peacefully on May 27, with loving family by her side, at Boothbay Green where she had lived since December 2015. Cora was born Jan. 27, 1924 in Boothbay to Eugene and Suzy Lewis and lived the greatest part of her life on Barter Island. She was the ninth child of 11, and grew up on the family farm, going to local schools.
Cora worked in many different local business, perhaps the most memorable being the Harbor Shop in downtown Boothbay Harbor. She and her second husband, Ernest Lowery, also ran her sister, Katherine’s lobster roll shack, with Ernest hand-hauling lobsters for her, rushing to pick out the meat and helping her make the best sandwich in town at the time.
Cora was known for a lot of things: her incredible apple pie and pretty much everything else she ever cooked, her very quick wit and ability to “get to the point,” her love of her family, and her generosity to anyone in need. Of course, they would also get a piece of her mind along with a piece of her heart! She was one of a kind and will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved her.
Cora is predeceased by daughter, Patricia Carter; son, Rodney Lowery; her parents; and all but one of her siblings.
Cora is survived by son, Ambrose “Sonny” Artzer and wife Brenda of Boothbay; sister, Priscilla Holmes of Boothbay Harbor; and daughter-in-law, Toni Lowery of Boothbay; grandchildren, Valerie Artzer and partner Michael Wood of Boothbay, Michael Artzer of Biddeford, Mark Artzer of Jay, Shari Plaice and husband Rob of Cape Cod, Mass., Andrew Carter of Boothbay Harbor, Lesley Blethen and husband Brian of Boothbay, Daniel Lowery and wife Ashlee of Boothbay, and Andrea Hodgdon and husband Tyler of Boothbay; granddaughter-in-law, Andrea “Andi” Lowery, who spent countless hours with Cora, making her life a very happy place to be. She is also survived by great-grandchildren, Brandon Long and wife Julia, Adam Plaice, Andi Plaice, Joshua Greenleaf, Jeremy Greenleaf, Wyatt Artzer, Faith Blethen, Glory Blethen, Taylor Lowery, Adam Lowery, Emma Hodgdon, and Gareth Hodgdon; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m., Sun., June 4 at Evergreen Cemetery, Barter Island Rd., Boothbay. Al Roberts will officiate. All are welcome.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Cora’s name to the Lincoln County Animal Shelter, 27 Atlantic Highway, PO Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556.
