Daniel E. Heydon, 64, formerly of Damariscotta, died Jan. 20. He was born in Ponca, Neb. to the late Ernie and Elanor Heydon. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Dan came to the Lincoln County area in the 70s and became well known as “Dan Dan the Cable Man.”
Dan and Candice Heydon were married in 1990 and ran the Oyster Creek Mushroom Company together for more than 20 years, giving Dan his most recent nickname “Dan Dan the Mushroom Man.” His jokes and smile has and will be missed in the area’s farmers’ markets and local restaurant kitchens.
Dan was a loving father to his daughters, Samantha Heydon, Christian Prola (Bob), and Anna St. John and to Candice’s sons Jason Boyd and the late Ian Boyd; proud grandfather to Serena and Theo Prola, Alaina Needleman and Cooper and Eden Boyd; and fond brother of Jerry Heydon and the late Jan Anderson. He will be forever remembered for his kind heart and wonderful sense of humor.
Although Dan moved away from Damariscotta a few years ago his wish was always to come home to Maine. A memorial will be held on the Damariscotta River this summer for family and friends.
The family has asked that donations be made in Dan’s name to the New England Center for Homeless Veterans, Advancement Office, 3rd Floor, 17 Court St., Boston, MA 02108.
