David J. Hayes, 89, of Jefferson, passed away on March 21 at MaineGeneral Medical Center, Augusta Campus with his family, close friends, and his neighbor and fishing buddy, Rev. Hinckley at his side.
He was born in Boston, Mass. on Sept. 2, 1923, the son of Michael and Maude (Ware) Hayes. Following the death of his father at an early age, his mother married William Sleeper and they moved to the farm in Jefferson.
David left school at an early age to help work on the farm and cut wood. For many years he worked in the woods. In 1944 he married Celia Jones and together they raised their four children.
Following Celia’s passing in 1991, he spent many years with his longtime companion, Corrine Moody, whom he cherished and his family loves dearly. David always loved telling stories, and his family enjoyed listening to them.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his family, including his grandsons and granddaughters. David was full of life and he showed it until the very end. He was one of a kind to all who knew him.
David is survived by his children, Robert “Bobby” Jones and wife Donna, Richard D. Hayes and wife Tina, Randall Hayes and fiancée Margo, and Ramona Hayes, all of Jefferson; special sister-in-law, Clara Brown; grandchildren, Mike, Diane, Bobby B., Debbie, Janet, Sarah, Joanne, Jessie, Jackie, Jeremy, Ryan, and Lindsey; and several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Visiting hours 6-8 p.m., Mon., March 25 at Lawry Brothers Funeral Home-Gray Chapel, 207 Windsor Neck Rd., Windsor where a funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. on Tues., March 26 with the Rev. Hinckley officiating. Spring burial will be at West Washington Cemetery.
