Donald Nutting Hewett, 93, of Somerville, went home to be with the Lord on Feb. 28 at Country Manor in Whitefield. He was born in Somerville on June 16, 1922, a son of Lloyd Frank Hewett and Jane Nutting Hewett. Don was a life-long resident of Somerville. He received his elementary education in the one room schoolhouse in South Somerville. He graduated from Cony High School in Augusta in the class of 1939. After high school he was in partnership with his father in the dairy business and took full ownership in 1958.
On Oct. 13, 1951 Don married Shirley A. Brown of Somerville. They had a happy marriage of 63 years until Don passed.
He was a member of the South Somerville Baptist Church where he served as a deacon for many years and at times taught Sunday school. Don served as a selectman for the town of Somerville for 33 years; served as moderator of town meetings; and also served on the planning board. He was a charter member of the Somerville Volunteer Fire Department and served as the town fire warden for over 50 years. In the fall of 2014, Don was presented the “Spirit of America” Award which was given jointly by the Town of Somerville and the State of Maine because of his many years of volunteering in the Somerville community.
Don loved the Lord, his church, and his family. He thoroughly enjoyed farming, working with the animals and working in the woods. For many years he cut Christmas trees, as well as hauled logs, pulp wood, and firewood.
He was predeceased by his parents; brother, Lloyd E. Hewett; sister-in-law Marjorie Hewett; and a daughter, Sylvia Jane Hewett.
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Shirley; and son, Mark A. Hewett and wife Francine of Ft. Wayne, Ind.
Friends are welcome to join the family for a time of visitation from 5-7 p.m., Thurs., March 5 at Hall’s of Waldoboro, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. A service to celebrate Don’s life will be held 1 p.m., Fri., March 6 at the South Somerville Baptist Church with Pastor John Dancer officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the West Washington Cemetery.
