Dorothy “Dorrie” Ryan, 74, passed away March 10 at Northwestern Medical Center in Saint Albans City, Vt.
Born in Morristown, N.J., on July 10, 1932, she was the daughter of the late Stuart and Dorothy (Lysaght) Goulding.
She was a graduate of Classic High School and attended Rhode Island State College.
On March 20, 1950, she married Elting Ryan who predeceased her on May 12, 1989.
A resident of Swanton since 2002, Dorrie lived many years in both Maine and Colorado. She spent most of her working life as a journalist for several local newspapers in Colorado, as well as serving as a teaching assistant in Maine and the Douglas County public school system in Colorado.
Since living in Swanton, Vt., she had become a faithful volunteer and parishioner of Holy Trinity Episcopal Church.
Dorrie will be remembered as an avid reader especially of mystery novels, a wonderful artist, and a master at vegetable and flower gardening. She also loved the ocean and fishing and enjoyed various crafts.
She leaves three sons, Stephen Ryan and wife Marie of Swanton, Vt., Timothy Ryan and wife Barbara of Alburgh, Vt., and Christopher Ryan and wife Joanna of Milton, Vt.; daughter, Carol Becker and husband Kent of Laramie, Wyo.; grandchildren, Michael, Sean and William Ryan all of Milton, Vt., Christopher E.J. Ryan of Delaware, and Katie Becker of Wyoming; step-grandchildren, Dwight Clapper of Alburgh, Vt., Albert Clapper, Jr. of Miami, Fla., Tracy Barossi of Massachusetts, and Heather Darby and Charity Darby of Alburgh, Vt.; sister, Jane Dickerman and husband John and their children of Bethlehem, N.H.; brother, David Goulding and his children of Cranston, R.I.; stepmother, Catherine Towers Goulding of New York; as well as two great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her parents and husband, Dorrie was predeceased by two infant children; sister, Barbara Entwistle; and sister-in-law, Mary Goulding.
Liturgy of Christian Burial 3 p.m., Sun., March 18 at the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, 38 Grand Ave., Swanton, Vt. The Rev. Reid D. Farrell will be the celebrant and homilist.
Following the service a reception to which all relatives and friends are invited will take place in the Holy Trinity Parish Hall.
