Dorothy M. Hopler, 88, of Jefferson, died May 6 at her residence after a period of failing health. She is predeceased by her husband of 60 years James A. Hopler.
Dorothy was born May 2, 1922 in Newark, N.J., the daughter of Thomas Joseph and Catherine Marie Donhauser Mulvey. She grew up in New Jersey, attending schools in Belleville, and graduating from St. Peters R.C. High School in Belleville.
Dorothy was employed as a clerk at a nursing home in Cedar Grove, N.J. for 19 years. After her retirement, she and Jim moved to Jefferson in 1987. Not one to be still, she began working in the kitchen of Moody’s Diner, where she enjoyed her work for several years.
She was a parishioner at St. Denis Catholic Church in Whitefield, was an avid reader, loved her pets, especially her dog Kita and cat Missy. She liked a good family celebration, and enjoyed a good party. She was voted “class clown” at her graduation from high school.
Survivors include sons, Edwin A. “Skip” Hopler and wife Heather of Glendale, Ariz. and James Hopler and wife Cathy of Waldoboro; daughters, Cathy Thornton and husband Mike of Waldoboro and Jean Paternoster and husband Mike of Little Falls, N.J.; grandchildren, Michael Knof and wife Darcy of Nobleboro, Chrissy Greene of Damariscotta, Scott Hopler of Tonopah, Ariz., Sean Hopler of Showlow, Ariz., Kelly Hopler Coyne and husband Francis of Chicago, Jeffrey Sprague of Waldoboro and Caitlin Hopler of Waldoboro; eight great-grandchildren; and her dear friend, Joan DePalma of Jefferson.
Friends were invited to call May 9 at the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro.Mass of Christian burial 11 a.m., Mon., May 10 at St. Denis Catholic Church in Whitefield. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery, Whitefield.
