Dwight Glidden, 67, of Damariscotta and Dresden, passed away at home Oct. 11 in the company of his wife and Clumber Spaniels. Although he was a life-long non-smoker, Dwight was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer in August 2012 which was presumed to be from Agent Orange exposure in Vietnam. Dwight maintained a positive “push through it” attitude through many radiation and chemo treatments. He met his daily commitments with an incredible work ethic. An inspiration to us all.
Dwight’s generous heart, quick sense of humor, sparkling blue eyes, and easy smile touched many lives. He was a hard working man who helped anyone he could.
Dwight was born on Sept. 26, 1947 in Brooks to Wendall and Winifred (Smith) Glidden. Dwight grew up in Brooks and attended local schools.
He served heroically in Vietnam in the U.S. Army. He was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries suffered in August 1967. Upon returning from the war, Dwight worked 20 years for Chicago Bridge and Iron as a boilermaker and Master Welder. Following his retirement from CB & I, he worked for 20 years for the U.S. Postal Service, serving as officer in charge for the New Harbor and South Bristol post offices. He retired in August 2003.
Dwight was predeceased by his brothers, Charles and Brandon Glidden.
He is survived by his loving wife, JoAnn Glidden of Damariscotta; parents, Wendall and Winifred Glidden of Brooks; sister, Brenda of Liberty; children from previous marriage, Tracy Gaspar of Glen Allen, Va., and Shannon Cloutier and husband John of Scarborough; grandchildren, Jenna, Taylor, and Nathan Gaspar, all of Virginia, and Logan, Sidney, and Payton, all of Scarborough; children, Kristen Wendling and husband David of Monterey, Cal., and Scott White and wife Celeste of Monterey, Cal.; grandchildren, Theodore and Madeline Wendling of Monterey, Cal., and Sophia and Collette White of Monterey, Cal.; and aunts, uncles and cousins.
According to Dwight’s wishes, there will be no services or memorial.
Dwight had a special place in his heart for their rescued Clumber Spaniels. Those that knew him best will remember his constant truck companion, Bess. Anyone planning an expression of sympathy is asked to consider contributions in Dwight’s memory to Clumber Spaniel Club of America Rescue & Placement, c/o Sue Carr, Chairman, 41 Compton Court, Basking Ridge, NJ 07920.
