Edward L. “Ted” Pickard, of Dresden, died at Glenridge Rehabilitation Center on Sept. 9, after a long illness.
He was born March 5, 1932 in Boston, Mass., the son of Mildred Lawrensen and John F. Pickard.
Ted was a graduate of Gardiner Area High School in 1950, Coburn Classical Institute, Waterville in 1951, and Leicester Junior College in 1954, with an AS degree. He was a member of the Kappa Delta Phi Fraternity while at Farmington State Teachers College and graduated in 1965.
He was employed in the Sales Tax Division of the State of Maine for several years. He left and entered the YMCA field after graduating from college. He worked in the Augusta YMCA, and then moved to Gloversville, N.Y., where he was employed at the YMCA for seven years and then transferred to Lawrence, Mass., for over five years there. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, both in Gloversville, N.Y., and Lawrence, Mass.
Ted was employed by the Exeter School System for a short time and then was hired as Assistant Director of Recreation for the Town of Seabrook, N.H. for over 12 years, retiring in 1997.
Ted moved to Dresden where he volunteered in the Athletic Department of Dresden Elementary School. He had also volunteered as a coach in Christ Episcopal Church Basketball League, Gardiner, and for several years as a coach of Gardiner Little League and assistant coach in the Wiscasset Recreation Department.
Ted and Dotty were married in Dresden on Oct. 9, 1960.
He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Dorothy Hall Pickard of Dresden; a daughter, Lynette Gagnon and husband Mike; three grandchildren, Chad, Hannah and Hunter of Somersworth, N.H.; sister, Joyce Camp and husband Ted of Kennebunkport; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was godfather to Vera L. Spurrier of Virginia Beach, Va., and Mary Tisi of Newcomb, N.Y.
Memorial service 1 p.m., Wed., Sept. 13 at Kincer Funeral Home, 130 Pleasant St., Richmond; burial will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery, Westbrook, with Pastor Carl Morrison officiating.
Arrangements are under the care of Kincer Funeral Home, Richmond.
