Elaine S. Laird, 80, of South Bristol, passed away peacefully on Aug. 29 in Long Beach, Cal. With her was her daughter, Susan. Elaine was born on April 15, 1934 in Waterbury, Conn., the daughter of the late Pat and Alice Serafine. She grew up in Waterbury, Conn. and attended local schools and was a graduate of St. Margaret School. After completing her high school education, she went on to the Hartford Hospital School of Nursing where she achieved her Registered Nurse degree.
After school she began her career working at the Waterbury Hospital. She married Robert Laird on Aug. 26, 1954. Shortly thereafter Bob would join the U.S. Air Force and the two would travel to various places. On their travels Elaine would occasionally work in the health care field as well as raise the couple’s two children. After moving to Maine, Elaine worked as a school nurse for both the Nobleboro and South Bristol Elementary schools before retiring in 1998.
Elaine was an expert knitter and quilter and was always working on various projects. She was a member of PEO for many years and enjoyed the friendships that she made along the way. She was a loving and caring person who fit perfectly into the health care field. She enjoyed traveling with her husband to California in the winters and being able to spend time with her family.
She is survived by her loving husband, Robert Laird of South Bristol; children, David Laird of Columbia, Md., Susan Laird of Long Beach, Cal., and Michael Laird and wife Sandy of House Springs, Mo.; grandchildren, Danielle Laird of Missouri, Collin Laird of Tucson, Ariz., and Derrick Laird of Columbia, Md.; and brother, Ellsworth Serafine and wife Jane of Waterbury, Conn.
A celebration of life will be held at 11 a.m., Fri., Sept. 5 at St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Newcastle.
