Elizabeth (“Betty”) Hill Brewer, 83, formerly a longtime resident of Boothbay Harbor died on Dec. 5 at Ledgewood Nursing Home in Windham from complications of a stroke with her children at her side.
Born in Quincy, Mass., on Aug. 14, 1924, she was the daughter of Walter and Helen Hill. After graduating from Morse High School in Bath in 1943, she earned her registered nurse degree from Peter Bent Brigham Women’s Hospital in Boston in 1947. Her first job was with Hyde School in Bath.
She married Arnold (“Arnie”) Brewer, Jr., of Boothbay Harbor in 1949 and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1999. Although they lived in Massachusetts while Arnie finished college, they moved to Boothbay Harbor in the mid-1950’s.
She did private duty nursing for a period of time and became a full-time mother after her third child was born. She was very involved in her children’s activities, as a Girl Scout leader and room mother for all three children.
Her interests ranged from dancing, especially to the Al Corey Band at the Boothbay Region Garden Club, particularly in support of the Salmagundi sales, to sewing, baking, crewel, and exercising at the Y. She sewed many of her children’s clothes and knitted many unique and cherished sweaters for her grandchildren. She also became a certified landscaped architect, designing landscapes in town and creating many Sunday flower arrangements for the United Methodist Church where she was a member and a participant in the Suzannah Wesley Circle. She particularly enjoyed the many car trips she took around Maine as well across the country.
She was predeceased by her husband in 2000.
Her survivors include three children, Stephanie and husband Jack Slocum of Harpswell and children (Brian, Alisha, Melissa, and Christian), Debby and husband Tim Tarr of Raymond and children (Jennifer, Aaron, and Jeremy), and Mark Brewer and wife Trish of Boothbay Harbor and daughters (Katelyn, Meghan, and Courtney); sister-in-law, Alice Lee of Florida and Boothbay Harbor; and several nieces and nephews. She was very close to her great-granddaughter, Elizabeth Peterson, who was named for her.
