Ellery C. Sawyer, 96, of New Harbor, passed away at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta on the morning of June 25.
He was born in Round Pond on Nov. 7, 1913, the oldest son of the late Arthur and Verna Sawyer. He always had a smile for everyone. He enjoyed traveling with his wife. He loved to dance, and traveled many miles across many dance floors in his lifetime.
Ellery was a lobster fisherman and a member of the Fisherman’s Co-op. In addition to that, he worked with his brother Ken in the plumbing business, worked for Bath Iron Works, worked as a carpenter, built his own boat, house and two cottages, and was an insurance broker and real estate salesman.
During WWII, he was in the Army Air Corps stationed in England where he was a mechanic. He made propellers for B17 and B24 bombers. He went overseas on a banana boat; they headed north to avoid the German submarines and landed in Ireland. He came back to the States on the Queen Elizabeth, which was conscripted as a troop carrier.
He was also a member of the Wells Hussey Post 42 American Legion in Damariscotta.
He was predeceased by a brother, Kenneth; and sister, Muriel.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Marilyn Sawyer of New Harbor; son, George Sawyer of New Harbor; brother, Stan Sawyer; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Funeral for Ellery 10 a.m., Tues., June 29 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta.
