Ellis C. Travis, 101, of Kennebunk and Steuben, formerly of Newcastle, passed away on March 30 at Bradford on the Common in Kennebunk.
Born in Peekskill, N.Y. on Jan. 12, 1915 to the late Pauline A. and Frank W. Travis, he was the youngest of three sons. Ellis attended Hendrick Hudson High School in Buchanan, N.Y. and earned a bachelor’s degree from Valparaiso University and a master’s degree from Columbia University. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII, attending the Military Intelligence Service Language School.
Ellis married the late Audrey E. May of New Rochelle, N.Y. on April 2, 1944. They celebrated 69 years of marriage. Ellis and Audrey lived in Babylon, N.Y. until 1982 when they moved to Harrington near their summer home in Steuben. In 1996 they built a home in Newcastle where they resided until 2014. Ellis came to live at Huntington Common in Kennebunk in 2014 to be near family.
Ellis spent many years in the teaching profession, primarily 8th grade Social Studies in Lindenhurst, N.Y., retiring in 1972. He was an avid organic gardener. His interests and talents also included carpentry and building, reading, and the study of esoteric psychology. He enjoyed traveling by RV for many years before and during his retirement.
Ellis is survived by his daughter, Jennifer Moyer and husband Tom of Kennebunk; and grandsons, Daniel Moyer of San Diego, Cal., David Moyer of Boston, Mass., and Timothy Moyer of Kennebunk.
Burial will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in Flushing, N.Y. at a later date.
