Eunice Charlotte (Gamage) Sigler, of Bristol, passed away on March 25 in Damariscotta. She was born May 4, 1936 in South Bristol to Harvey and Jennie (Plummer) Gamage. She graduated from Lincoln Academy in Newcastle with the class of 1954. She attended Westbrook Junior College, which later became part of the University of New England.
She married Donald Roy Sigler of Hagerstown, Md. on Jan. 29, 1956, after Don returned from military service with the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. After their wedding, Don went to work for Eunice’s father at Gamage Shipyards in South Bristol. In addition, she worked with Don on family farm, where they raised Black Angus cattle. While others would comment about how aggressive the Black Angus breed could be, Eunice remembered them as always gentle, and very tame, almost like her pets. In addition, Eunice and Don operated a custom slaughtering business on the site of the farm.
Eunice enjoyed horticulture, and for a time worked at Spencer’s Greenery and Pinkham’s Plantation, where she oversaw a large production of Christmas Poinsettias each year. She also spent time during the latter parts of her career serving as a cashier and night manager at Yellowfront Grocery in Damariscotta, and was well known and loved by community patrons of the local grocery store.
She had a love of horses, training to ride in the English discipline while in college, and she passed this love on to her daughter, Yvette, and to some of her grandchildren as well. Eunice has ridden horses on the family farm with three generations of her family, and could still be seen riding up until last year, with her beloved donkey, Chippy, following behind. She will be especially missed by her dog, Lucy, who would announce the arrival of visitors to the family home so that they would feel welcome.
Eunice was predeceased by Don just over three months ago, and she missed him deeply.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is predeceased by sisters, Ella Lane and Dorothy Wright.
She is survived by her children and their spouses, Yvonne and Paul Pfeiffer of Virginia, Charles and Belinda Sigler of Florida, Clay and Becky Sigler, Clell and Sherry Sigler, and Yvette and Craig Woodman, all of Bristol; sisters, Nancy Gamage, Gertrude Rice, and Harriet Moroney; brother, Linwood Gamage; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Friends are welcome to join the family for visitation for Eunice and Don from 5-7 p.m., Fri., April 1 at Hall Funeral Home in Waldoboro. A private burial will be held at the Harrington Cemetery in Bristol.
Donations may be made in Eunice’s name to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America, 383 U.S. Route One, Suite 2C, Scarborough, ME 04074.
