Jacqueline Fleur Jones, 84, of Damariscotta, passed away at the Cove’s Edge Nursing Facility on March 18. Born on Oct. 23, 1930 in Lexington, Mass., she was the daughter of Alton and Irma (Morang) Dowling.
Jacqueline grew up in Lexington, Mass. where she attended schools, and graduated from Lexington High School in 1949. She received her bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Simmons College in 1954, and later attended Syracuse University, where she received her master’s degree in Library Science.
Jacqueline spent her summers at her grandparents’ and great-grandparents’ farm in Nobleboro, now the Montessori school. She attended summer camp during the 1940s as a youth at Camp Makaria, East Neck Rd., Nobleboro, the farm of her Hall cousins. While a teen, she continued her summer trips and became a counselor at Wavus Camp for Girls in Jefferson.
She worked as a librarian all of her working life, specializing in children’s literature. Jacqueline worked at Greene Public Library, Greene, N.Y., and Binghamton Public Library, Binghamton, N.Y., before starting at the Grandin Library in Clinton, New Jersey where she became the Library Director. She worked there for over 20 years before retiring in 1996. Upon her retirement, she returned to Maine where she became active in the community.
She loved to garden, and was a member of the Old Bristol Garden Club. She made beautiful floral arrangements, and often worked with dried materials to make beautiful wreaths and swags. She also enjoyed photography, and became an accomplished photographer, winning several prizes at local county fairs. She was always active in the church, including the First Baptist Church of Nobleboro, and often created libraries at the different churches she attended.
Besides her parents, she was predeceased by her sister, Phyllis Luella Brown of Anchorage, Alaska.
She is survived by her children, Kent Jones and wife Pam Angst of Pewaukee, Wis., Christian Jones and wife Del Rae of East Lansing, Mich., and Victoria Caron of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; grandchildren, Larissa Caron, Daniel Caron, Spencer Jones, and Samantha Jones; cousin, Grace Studley and husband Jack of Nobleboro; as well as several nieces and nephews.
A time of visitation will be held 5-7 p.m., Fri., March 27 at the Strong-Hancock Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. A funeral will be held 2 p.m., Sun., March 29, at the First Baptist Church of Nobleboro. She will be laid to rest privately in the Westview Cemetery in Lexington, Mass.
