John W. Neubig, 73, of Friendship, died March 31 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He was born Sept. 18, 1939 in Waldoboro to Jack and Rosalind Kaler Neubig. John attended schools in Friendship and graduated from Waldoboro High School in the class of 1957.
John worked as a lobsterman and as a brick mason. He built two lobster boats for himself, Little Joe and 3-D’s. He helped his sons build their skiffs when they started lobstering. He also helped construct the fireplace at the Elks Club in Rockland. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1962 to 1964 as a member of the Seabees.
He belonged to the Charles C. Lilly American Legion Post in Waldoboro, Stone-Scott Watson VFW in Friendship, was a 50-year member of Meduncook Masonic Lodge in Friendship, lifetime member of Friendship Museum, and a member of the Friendship United Methodist Church.
John enjoyed deer hunting, bowling, and playing cards and loved being outside whether working in his garden or coaching Little League. He also enjoyed working on his stamp collection and watching the Red Sox and NASCAR on television. He was the happiest and most content when he and his family spent Sundays together at his property on Friendship Long Island digging clams, boiling lobsters and roasting hot dogs. He always referred to the island as “God’s Country.”
He was predeceased by his parents and by a brother, David.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Janet Neubig of Friendship; sons, David Neubig and wife Yana of Friendship, and Dwayne Neubig of Friendship; grandson, Joshua Neubig of Friendship; sister, Mary Jane Dillingham of Litchfield; brothers-in-law, Kendall Winchenbach and wife Bette of Bangor, and Gary Winchenbach and wife Joanne of Gardiner; many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Service to celebrate John’s life 2 p.m., Sat., April 6 at the Friendship United Methodist Church in Friendship. Burial will be in the Harbor Cemetery in Friendship.
