Josephine Spence, 93, of Warren, passed away April 2. She was born in New York City in the Borough of Manhattan, N.Y., on Aug. 1, 1912 to immigrant parents (Salvatore and Grazia Raccuglia) from Borgetto, Sicily, she attended New York City public schools and entered the College of New Rochelle as a full scholarship student. After earning a BS she worked in municipal hospitals as a laboratory technician followed by employment at C.V. Starr (now AIG) as a corporate medical technician. She taught in the Rockland School District and fondly remembered many of her students. She was married to Wendell Spence, deceased. During their marriage they lived in New York City, Garrison, N.Y., Waldoboro and Warren. Mrs. Spence was a devotee of opera. She was an avid reader, enjoyed travel and wrote poetry in her later years. She is survived by nieces and nephews, Theresa G. Waivada of Garrison, N.Y., Joseph Frisina of Jackson Heights, N.Y., Robert and Mary Jane Simmons of Friendship, Gwendolyn Poland of Round Pond, Janis Lawson of Thomaston, and Linda Mahoney of Cushing; and a number of great-nieces and nephews. Visitation 10-11 a.m., Fri., May 7 at the Hall Funeral Home, Main St., Waldoboro, followed by a funeral service at 11 a.m. Spring interment will be in the German Cemetery, Waldoboro. The family requests no flowers and friends wishing to make a remembrance are asked to donate local organizations offering services to the community. Arrangements are entrusted to Hall Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Waldoboro.
