Leslie Leon Gile, 67, of Waldoboro, died Oct. 20 at his home.
He was born Dec. 28, 1940 in Rochester, N.H., a son of the late Albert Edward and Sara Frances (Weeks) Gile.
Les was a graduate of Spaulding High School in Rochester, N.H. and University of New Hampshire and took graduate classes at Syracuse and Cornell.
On June 29, 1969 he married the former Ardelle Chase in South Egremont, Mass.
Les taught agriculture in West Canada Valley Central School in Newport, N.Y. and Herkimer County BOCES in Herkimer, N.Y. He worked with his brother-in-law doing landscaping and was groundskeeper at the Albert Schweitzer Friendship Center in Gt. Barrington, Mass. He worked as milk inspector for Massachusetts and was farm manager for the Gould Farm, a residential center for people with schizophrenia in Monterey, Mass. Later he worked as a carpenter for Cappelletti Builders and in home care for Mid Coast and Mental Health and a residential counselor.
Les loved people. He enjoyed to traveling, carpentry, history, world affairs, nature, photography, writing to government officials and the newspaper, reading, walking on local trails and saving energy. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a “Jack Of All Trades.”
In addition to his wife of more than 39 years of Waldoboro, Les is survived by a son, Timothy Gile of Richmond, Mass.; daughter, Ann Selman and husband Daniel of Pelvin, France; two grandsons, Isaac and Tenzin Selman; granddaughter, Mi-a Selman; aunt, Audrey Famelgetti of Moody Beach; two brothers, Kenneth Gile of Moody Beach and Albert Gile and wife Pricilla of Hamiliton, Mont.; and two sisters, Marilyn Brenner and husband Arris of Athens, Greece and Linda Pitman and husband Denny of Thorndike, N.H.
Relatives and friends are invited to join the family for a service to celebrate Les’s life 1 p.m., Sun., Oct. 26 at the Waldoboro United Methodist Church, Friendship St., Waldoboro. Pastor Beverly Blaisdell and the Rev. Joseph Beardsley will officiate. A time of fellowship and remembering will be held before the service in the church vestry.
Should friends so desire, donations in Les’s memory may be made to the Waldoboro United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 354, Waldoboro, ME 04572-0354 towards the Mechuwanna Camp Fund or to benefit the Hanson Disease Hospital in lower Pokhara Valley, a leper hospital in Nepal.
