Malcolm L. Giles, 72, of Edgecomb, passed away unexpectedly on June 21 in Newcastle. He was born in Gardiner on May 12, 1940, the son of Drummond and Mellie (Boudway) Giles.
While growing up in Edgecomb, he went to the local Edgecomb Eddy School. He then entered the Wiscasset school system and graduated from Wiscasset High School in 1958.
He held many varying jobs throughout his life, including working for Thompson Academy on an island in Boston Harbor, road commissioner for the Town of Edgecomb, and co-owner with his brother Bob of M&R Giles Construction, to name a few. Most recently he enjoyed working as a truck driver for Back Meadow Farm in Damariscotta.
He had a passion for boating. He built his first boat while working in Boston Harbor. He then took a boat building course in Boothbay Harbor, constructing different types of boats. He participated in boat races and worked at local shipyards. He shared his passion for sailing with his wife and first mate, Dorothy (Dottie). They had many adventures on their boat, Chinkapin, including a voyage from Maine to Florida and back!
In addition to sailing, he also enjoyed listening to blue-grass music and traveling the open road in his RV (licensed “Grumps,” the name affectionately given to him by his nine grandchildren) with Dottie and their African Grey Parrot, Olivia.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Giles.
