Marilyn June Hugill, 83, of Saco, formerly of Jefferson, passed away peacefully on Dec. 18 after a brief illness, surrounded by her family.
Marilyn was born on June 23, 1928, a daughter of George W. Gaebler and Beatrice Helen Walmsley. She was one of three children. She grew up in Fulton, N.Y. where she attended elementary school and Fulton High School. She finished her last two years of high school at Penn Hall in Chambersburg, Penn. and was a member of Alpha Delta Pi Sorority.
Marilyn acquired her pilot’s license while in New York and met her husband Frederick C. Hugill while flying. They were married on June 23, 1953 and started their family in New York and later moved to Sudbury, Mass. She and Frederick had five children: Frederick Jr., Anne, Tom, Mary and Paul. The family later moved to Maine and finally settled in Saco in 1977. For most of her children’s lives she was a stay-at-home mother, getting her first job at Sears in October of 1980. She was employed by Sears for 13 years, retiring in December of 1993. After her retirement, she spent time with family and friends and even took up golfing, bowling and began to winter in Florida.
After her husband’s passing in 1998, Marilyn traveled extensively with family to Guam, Hawaii, Washington State, Missouri, San Diego, Virginia and, of course, Florida. Marilyn bought a home in Brooksville, Fla., where until this year she would winter from October until early June.
Marilyn was a quiet and unassuming person who always had a ready smile and lots of love for her family. She watched all of her children graduate high school and college and survived to see all of her grandchildren graduate high school and many graduate from college. She enjoyed many hobbies; among those were gardening, sewing, knitting, reading, going to the beach, wintering in Florida, her Sheltie Harmony and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Marilyn was predeceased by her husband Frederick on Sept. 6, 1998 and brother, William.
She is survived by her children, Frederick C. Hugill Jr. and wife Susan of St. Louis, Mo., Anne M. Hugill of Saco, Thomas V. Hugill and wife Cheryl of Scarborough, Mary H. Turnage and husband Charles of Saco and Paul D. Hugill and wife Debby of Chesapeake, Va.; sister, Lois Hudson of Leesburg, Fla.; 10 grandchildren, Adrianne, Bethany, Anthony, Robert, Gregory, Julie, Sarah, Matthew, Mark and Beth; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
