Mary M. Day, 75, of Madison, passed away Dec. 13 at Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor. Mary was born at home in Manchester on July 28, 1939. She was the daughter of Brian and Julia Wheeler Day.
Mary attended schools in Augusta and was a homemaker most of her life, raising five children. Mary met Joseph Cates in 1989 and in 1991 they were joined in marriage by a Native American ceremony, making their home in Madison. During their 26 years of marriage, Joe took loving care of Mary through her many illnesses. When she was well, she enjoyed coming to the coast – enjoying the lighthouses, the tranquility of the ocean, and eating lobster. When traveling with her grandchildren, she enjoyed camping and shopping. When her son Billy visited, she would have him bring Chinese food and salt water taffy. Mary enjoyed old time country music and would even sing “Funny Face, ‘I Love You'” to the children.
Mary was smiling every day.
