Mary Maxine Stewart, 80, of Waldoboro and former longtime resident of Union, went to be with her Lord Feb. 14 at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.
Maxine, as she was known to her friends, was born March 11, 1931 in Rockland, the daughter of Harry Shaw and Lula Mae Butler Lovejoy, and attended the Hawes School in Union.
She married George Stewart Aug. 22, 1948 and together they made their home in Union. For 28 years, she was employed by Sylvania in Waldoboro, retiring in 1992. She returned to work for Osram-Sylvania for another five years, then retired again, for good. Always a hard worker, Maxine worked for Allens Blueberries, where she raked the fields and also led raking crews, she also worked briefly for Electrotech, where her daughter was her supervisor.
She enjoyed her flower gardens and solving word find books, was a member of the Church of the Nazerene in Union, and especially loved family time, playing with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, and bird watching.
Maxine is predeceased by her husband of 48 years, George Stewart, who died in 1996; grandchildren Laurie Cantwell, Lisa Trahan, and Devon Stewart; siblings, Harry Wilson Lovejoy, Joseph Albert Lovejoy, Calvin Author Lovejoy, Charles Tripp Lovejoy, and Arlene E. Overlock; and lifelong friend, Lottie Whitney Upham, who passed away Jan. 12.
Survivors include sons, Leslie Stewart and companion NeHie of Appleton; David Stewart and wife Sabrina of Owls Head, and Robert Stewart and wife Brenda of Rockland; daughters, Janet Rector and husband Robert of Union, Cynthia Cunningham of South Hope, Rhonda Grubbs of Waldoboro, Naomi “Tina” Stewart of Rockland, and Mary Stewart of Waldoboro; 22 grandchildren; and 28 great-grandchildren.
Friends are invited to gather with the family 12-1 p.m., Mon., Feb. 20 when a celebration of Maxine’s life will be celebrated at 1 p.m. from the Hall Funeral Home, 949 Main St., Waldoboro. Spring interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery, Union.
