Mildred E. Lewis, 88, of Southport, died at Mid Coast Hospital in Brunswick on March 28 with her family at her side.
She was born April 14, 1921 in Gray to Thomas and Wilma Morton Marr. As a young girl she moved to the Boothbay area with her family and attended Boothbay schools.
She married Norman S. Lewis in 1940 and they made their home and raised their six children at the Southport Bridge tender’s home in Southport where Norman was the bridge tender for 40-plus years. When the state demolished the home, they bought a house nearby and she and Norman lived there together until his death in 2001. In most recent years, her son, Duane, resided with her.
Besides raising her children, Mildred worked at St. Andrews Hospital for many years. Later in life, Mildred and Norman worked side-by-side at the Boothbay Region Co-op as lobster pickers. She enjoyed her family and always gave you a big smile and a warm welcome when you went to visit. She especially enjoyed cooking and at mealtimes there was always enough for a small army. Mildred was an avid cribbage player and taught all of her children how to play and they would often stop in for a quick game. In more recent years she participated in the cribbage tournaments in Wiscasset and on many occasions came home a winner.
She was predeceased by her husband, Norman; son, Donald Lewis; daughter, Ruth Ann Snowman; grandson, Roy Lewis Jr.; and brothers, George, Tom and Richard.
Survivors include her sons, Roy Lewis and wife Joanne, Norman S. Lewis Jr. and wife Nancy, Dwight Lewis and wife Debbie, Duane Lewis and wife Verna; son-in-law, Gary Snowman; sisters, Shirley Morgan of Boothbay Harbor and Clara MacQuarrue and husband Warren of California; grandsons, Donny and Billy Lewis, Jody Lewis, Joshua Lewis, Lee and Willy Snowman; granddaughters, Katie Yearance, Maurie Lewis and Melissa; several great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Honoring Mom Lewis’ request, there will be a private family graveside service in May with Al Roberts officiating.
Donations in her memory may be made to St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay Harbor.
Arrangements are entrusted to Simmons, Harrington & Hall Funeral Home, Boothbay.
