Mildred M. Poland, 62, died Nov. 22 at Cove’s Edge in Damariscotta after a long, courageous battle with COPD. Her loving daughter and best friend were at her side. Mildred was born Sept. 15, 1952 in Damariscotta to Frank and Marion Webber.
Through her life Mildred worked as a waitress, a clammer, a clam shucker, and processing many other seafoods. Her favorite job was as a waitress because she loved people. Anyone who knew Mildred always remembered her smile or the twinkle in her brown eyes.
Mildred enjoyed league bowling for many years in both Waldoboro and Brunswick. Mildred also was an avid bingo, casino and card player. She also loved to play a good old-fashioned game of Scrabble or Yahtzee with friends and family.
She was predeceased by husband, Clyde R. Poland Sr.; sister, Lolita Rooker; nephew, Arthur Webber; and nieces, Wanda and Sonja Webber.
She is survived by daughter, Sandy and husband Fernald Poland of Bremen; sons, Jeremy Sykes of Lewiston/Auburn, Monty Sykes and partner Robbie Keizer of Thomaston, and C.J. Poland and wife Amanda; grandchildren, Evan, Alexis, Wyatt, and Kaylee Poland, and Ricky, Megan, and Emily Sykes; great-grandson, Nathan Chaisty; sisters, Gloria and husband Claude Elliott Sr. of Harpswell, and Sue-Ellen Benner of Buxton; brother, Robert Webber of Newcastle; nieces, Faith Brazier, and Melinda Martel; nephew, Claude Elliott Jr.; and many, many friends and loved ones.
A service to celebrate Mildred’s life will be held at 10:30 a.m., Thurs., Dec. 4 at the Bremen Union Church on Rt. 32 in Bremen, with a potluck luncheon immediately following with time to share memories and stories. A graveside service will be held in the spring.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Mildred’s name may be made to Lincoln County Animal Shelter (who once saved her Dottie dog), P.O. Box 7, Edgecomb, ME 04556; or CHIPS Inc, P.O. Box 6, New Harbor, ME 04554 who graciously built her a ramp on her porch on the hottest day of the year last year.
