Mildred Thayer Ellinwood, 93, of Edgecomb, passed away May 16 under the loving care of Cove’s Edge Nursing Home in Damariscotta. The daughter of Earl and Mildred (Webber) Thayer, she was born in East Templeton, Mass., June 9, 1915.
Following her public education, Mildred attended Becker Business College in Worcester, Mass. She later trained as a nurse at Gardner State Hospital in Gardner, Mass where she worked for several years before marrying Roswell C. Ellinwood.
Following her marriage, she provided elderly home care in Athol, Mass. In 1949 she and her husband moved to the River Road in Edgecomb where they raised their four children. Mildred was an avid gardener of fruits, vegetables and flowers. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting and sewing for her family and friends and she was a faithful Red Sox fan.
She and Roswell were winter residents of Lake Wales, Fla. and in the summer enjoyed their camp in Athol, Mass., as well as occasional vacations to Alaska, Minnesota and Montana.
Predeceased by her husband Oct. 21, 2002, Mildred leaves her four children, Laroy Ellinwood and wife Gail of Edgecomb, Gail Smith and husband Larry of Wiscasset, Merry Zimbalkin of Wiscasset and Rebecca LaPorte of Sterling, Conn.; two sisters, Dorothy Kimball and family of Athol, Mass., and Eleanor Sawicki and family of Otter River, Mass.; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a dear sister-in-law, Emily Jamison of Spring Hill, Fla. and her family.
Service to honor her life 1 p.m., May 19 at the chapel of the Strong Funeral Home, 612 Main St., Damariscotta. She will be laid to rest, with her husband, at the North Edgecomb Cemetery, Rt. 27, Edgecomb.
