Norma Jean Erskine, 76, of Boothbay Harbor and Largo, Fla., died March 16 in the Gregory Wing at St. Andrews Village in Boothbay Harbor. She was born Feb. 13, 1935 in North Newcastle to George and Hazel Keyes Russell. She attended local schools and graduated from Lincoln Academy in the class of 1953. She worked at Waltz Pharmacy during high school and after she graduated. She married Thomas W. Erskine and together they moved to Boothbay Harbor.
She began working for Dr. Carl Griffin as his office manager. She worked with Dr. Griffin for over 30 years until she retired. She went back to school and received her C.N.A. and Med-Tech licenses. She worked at the Gregory Wing. She divided her time between Maine and Florida. She worked as a C.N.A., Med-Tech, hairdresser, and floral designer in both Maine and Florida. After her husband died, she built a home in Boothbay Harbor where she eventually moved to be closer to her family. In Florida, she was a member of the Red-Hatters and the Hobby Club. She enjoyed watching tropical birds, crafts, quilting, traveling, cutting hair and helping stray animals.
Norma Jean and her family were a host family for two different foreign exchange students.
She was predeceased by her husband, Thomas William Erskine and sister, Frances Newell.
She is survived by daughters, Misty Marston and husband Ken of Boothbay and Tomi Erskine of Pittston; son, Thomas Erskine and wife Bonnie of Boothbay; grandsons, Dylan Schaffer of St. Petersburg, Fla., Thomas Schaffer of Woolwich, Justin Erskine of San Francisco, Cal. and Jesse Erskine of Edgecomb; brothers, Charles Russell and wife Lucy of Alna and Largo, Fla. and George Russell and wife Margaret of North Newcastle; sisters, Laurel “Poppy” Truchon of Nobleboro and Jackie House and husband Chick of Wiscasset and Largo, Fla.; and several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
Graveside service will be held at the Evergreen Cemetery in Boothbay in the spring to be announced.
