Polly Glueck, 70, passed away peacefully at the Hill House in Bath on the morning of Oct. 6 surrounded by her loving family and minister.
Polly was born in Rockville Center, N.Y., to Charles G. and Betty W. Glueck. She grew up in Philadelphia where she attended Quaker schools, and enjoyed summering on an island in New Hampshire, and later on Little Point in Newcastle. Polly graduated from Penn Hall Jr. College in Chambersburg, Penn.
She moved to Boston in 1969 where she worked for the insurance company Crum and Forster. While there, she was active in the English Speaking Union, and enjoyed the Boston Symphony Orchestra, operas, the Nutcracker, and Harvard football games in the fall.
A cerebral aneurism in 1980 necessitated a move to her parents’ home in Newcastle. Polly joined the Newcastle Damariscotta Women’s Club and helped with the book table at Founders Day at the Lincoln Home. As a member of the Second Congregational Church in Newcastle, she enjoyed serving on the library committee and being a part of the Women’s Fellowship fair.
Polly loved going places and seeing things. She visited much of the United States as well as Canada, England, Germany, Austria, Italy, and cruised the inland waterways of Alaska and the Baltic from Copenhagen to St. Petersburg. At home, she was devoted to the family’s dogs and gained much pleasure from them. Summer sailing on the family sloop, Linnet, was always a delight.
Polly moved to the Lincoln Home independent apartments in 2002 and to the Hill House in Bath in 2008, where she was lovingly cared for by a devoted staff.
Polly was predeceased by her parents, Charles and Betty Glueck.
She is survived by a brother, Charles Glueck, Jr. and companion Karen Raccuia of Boston, Mass.; brother, Peter Glueck and wife Susan of Newcastle; niece, Sarah Carlisle and husband Ben of Holliston, Mass.; and nephew, Peter Glueck of Brunswick.
