Robert Bentley Glidden, 61, of Newcastle, died July 6 at Maine Medical Center as the result of a massive stroke.
He was born Dec. 20, 1944, in Damariscotta, the son of Doris Borgerson Glidden and the late Bentley Lothrop Glidden of Newcastle. Robert contracted polio as a child, and with self-determination and guidance from his mother, was able to walk again.
Bobby loved life, people and his pipe. He busied himself with several hobbies, including woodcarving, picking up bottles and collecting cookbooks. His favorite activity was setting up and attending the Second Congregational Church Wednesday night Community Suppers. He willingly mowed lawns and shoveled snow for friends and acquaintances.
Bobby will be long remembered for his story-telling ability and characteristic pipe. He often referred to himself as “Smokey the Bear.”
He was predeceased by his father, Bentley Glidden.
He is survived by his mother, Doris Glidden of Newcastle; brother, David of Newcastle; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Celebration to honor Bobby’s life 2 p.m., Fri., July 14 at the Second Congregational Church, Newcastle, with Rev. Ken Dale officiating.
He will be laid to rest with his father at the Pine Knoll Cemetery, Newcastle.
